With school starting back, it’s inevitable that your kid’s teacher is going to assign “15 minutes of reading” for homework every night. Yes, EVERY night.
HOW are you going to fit that in with dinner, soccer practice, gymnastics, AND the ever dreaded math homework?!?
For short reading stints, my go-to for kids are magazines. Did you know there are some great FREE or low-cost magazines out there for kids? These are my top 3 picks:
- LEGO Magazine– With jokes, comic strips, and build ideas from other kids, this FREE publication from the Lego community can’t be beat!
- National Geographic for Kids– Beautiful pictures, fun facts, and short articles on animals are the heart of this magazine. Offerings for multiple ages allow this magazine to grow up with your child.
- Highlights Magazine– A true classic magazine for kids, Highlights has a variety of features that appeal to nearly all kids. Hidden pictures, short stories, and contributions from readers make this a great pick!
LEGO Magazine is totally free. There ARE subscription costs for Nat Geo and Highlights. However, many discount magazine sites can help you get the subscriptions for cheaper. I have also noticed that as the time goes by with our subscriptions, the company actually offers very cheap one year deals to keep you as a customer.
Hopefully this gives parents some good ideas on how to fit in that mandatory reading homework time each night….you know, between deciding which canned vegetable to throw on the table for supper with the chicken fingers and yelling at your child for leaving their cleats in the hallway…AGAIN. ;-)
